Fielding presents REST in ...Interesting discussion. Fielding presents REST in his dissertation as an architectural style (= set of architectural constraints). One constraint of REST is that the server must be stateless. Advantage would be scalability. Imho, stateless servers imply synchronous communication with the client. Ajax on the other hand, needs the server to keep track of communication in order to enable asynchronous communication via callbacks.
